The Swarm Foundation gathers a global community of social entrepreneurs who see that the challenges of the 21st Century demand a new approach to the way organizations are structured. We catalyze massive cooperative projects by providing a technological and organizational platform for the rapid assembly of distributed resources.

The Power of the Swarm

In the hours following the 2005 London Bombings, a newly-created Wikipedia entry was updated almost 3000 times. This was just one aspect of a multi-platform deluge of up-to-the-minute information contributed voluntarily by web users. The result is an on-growing news source and historical record far more comprehensive and nuanced than what any single newspaper or cable news channel could provide.

Now imagine this shared information acting as a pivot point for the rapid mobilization of resources. Relief groups, both established and ad hoc, could swarm to the points of greatest need. Meanwhile, other private and public organizations can coordinate to support these efforts and immediately begin planning for the long term consequences.

Disaster relief is just one of many potential applications of the swarm organizational model. We envision a growing wave of person-to-person business ventures and social projects that change the way we live and work. The SwarMachine project networking platform will allow new entrepreneurs to recruit skilled partners and obtain vital resources with unprecedented fluidity. Swarm Venture will provide legal and operational models that facilitate the rapid assembly of new private and public organizations. The Swarm concept can be applied to any problem or opportunity that requires cooperation by distributed individuals.

Our goal is to cultivate a new technological and organizational commons, where users share innovations and assemble around projects. We will catalyze the growth of the community by managing targeted initiatives that attract talented cooperators, and then supporting those initiatives in every way possible.

Focal Projects: The Eye of the Swarm

In order to build the necessary critical mass of agents, we will focus our attention on projects that as much possible are both inspirational and structural. Inspirational projects attract a necessary critical mass of agents and catalyze more widespread cooperation towards common goals. Structural projects ensure the long term health and effectiveness of the organization. Those projects that contain both qualities will provide the driving force that turns this vision into a reality.
